VOTE VERBAL!
I am Allyn Verbal. In 2019, I purchased a home in Yelm, and my youngest child is a teenager attending school in the Yelm Community School (YCS) district. Recently, I heard someone say a community is only as good as its schools, and as a parent invested in my child's education, I wholeheartedly agree; that is why I am running for YCS School Board, District 3.
Not only am I actively involved as a YCS parent volunteer, but I also serve as an emergency substitute teacher. Currently, I am in the process of jumpstarting parent groups at Yelm Middle School (YMS) and Yelm High School (YHS) in collaboration with the YMS and YHS school administrations. We aim to have these groups up and running before the next academic year.
VOTE THE V!
Vote for Allyn Verbal, Yelm Community Schools (YCS) School Board, District 3!
Since my child enrolled in YCS in August 2022, I have made it a point to attend all school board meetings, missing only three. To my surprise, I discovered the newest board director has been on the board for almost ten years; the other four directors have been board directors for at least fifteen years or more. Additionally, I learned that board meetings serve as a platform for public voting, but the directors receive information one week in advance, effectively deciding their vote beforehand. This raised important questions for me:
"How does the board get community input BEFORE they vote?
Do most Yelm citizens know the name of their own YCS district director?
How are the YCS district directors involved in their district and/or the City of Yelm?"
Covering a vast expanse of 192 miles, the YCS district comprises ten schools, and educates over 5,900 students in Thurston and Pierce County. Currently, there are five district board directors responsible for overseeing its operations.
I firmly believe the time has come for transparency, stronger relationships, and a thriving sense of community.
I envision a YCS school board that actively fosters ongoing relationships will stakeholders involved.
I strive for a YCS school board that effectively communicates the services it provides, ensuing that our community is well informed.
I am dedicated to making the YCS school board more visible and engaged within our districts and the City of Yelm.
So, I urge you to VOTE the V!
Vote for a voice, value, and visibility in Yelm Community Schools.
